Philippe Rombi was born on April
3rd, 1968 in Pau (France).
He made the first part of his
musical studies in the Conservatoire National de Région of
Marseille, in particular with Pierre Barbizet for piano and with Pol
Mule for the conducting, and obtained a First Prize of conducting, a
Golden Medal in piano and chamber music, as well as Grand Prix of
the City of Marseille. It is by discovering the compositions of John
Williams for Star Wars and Close Encounters of the third kind that
Philippe Rombi decides to complete his studies and specialize in
soundtrack writing. Having thought of UCLA (Los Angeles) he opts for
the Ecole Supérieure de Musique of Paris, in the class of Antoine
Duhamel, and obtain in two years
a Diplome Superieur de Composition.
The first
works of Philippe Rombi for the film industry were short films of
pupil of the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Métiers de i’image et
the Son (Fémis), in particular Isabelle Broué. Is is also there that
he met François Ozon for whom he composed then his first movie Les
Amants Criminels (1999). Then it was Sous le Sable (2000), Swimming
Pool (2003), 5x2 (2005) and Angel (2007). Philippe Rombi also wrote,
among others, the original scores for Oui, Mais…, by Yves Lavandier
(2001) and two Christian Carion’s movies: Une Hirondelle a fait le
Printemps (2001) followed by his first international success with
Joyeux Noel (2005), for which he was nominated for Césars 2005.
Besides the
fact of being a composer and orchestrator, Philippe Rombi is also a
pianist and a conductor.
