Awesome score though. Approximately one month later selections from two MESRINE movies will be released on CD in France. 75% of the score included in both films was composed by Marcus Trumpp with the rest provided by Dana Niu and Marco Beltrami. Next year Marco will be scoring long-awaited new project of Alex Proyas KNOWING about a school teacher (Nicholas Cage) who opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son's elementary school; in it are some chilling predictions -- some that have already occurred and others that are about to -- that lead him to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold. And as always there is something new in the pipeline and they are currently working on a sci-fi REPOSSESSION MAMBO, which is set in the near future when artificial organs can be bought on credit, it revolves around a man who struggles to make the payments on a heart he has purchased. He must therefore go on the run before said ticker is repossessed. The film was directed by Miguel Sapochnik (The Dreamer) based on the script by Eric Garcia adapted from his own novel. It includes rather promising casts of Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Liev Schreiber and Alice Braga. The film will be released by Universal Pictures. No release date has been set yet.

01/05/08: From Mikael Carlsson's Upcoming Film Scores blog: "Marco Beltrami has scored AMUSEMENT, the upcoming horror film directed by John Simpson (Freeze Frame). Beltrami replaced Debbie Wiseman as the composer on the film after she had to withdraw due to conflicting schedules. AMUSEMENT is a classic stalker thriller, to be released by Picturehouse Entertainment and New Line Cinema in September. Stars include Jessica Lucas, Katheryn Winnick and Laura Breckenridge. Beltrami has also written the music for THE HURT LOCKER, Kathryn Bigelow's Iraq war thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce and David Morse."

28/04/08: THE INVISIBLE bootleg finally appears. Total time is 68:05 and the bootleg features 37 tracks. The film is produced by First Light Production and Kinsgate Films and is currently in post-production. No release date was announced yet. You can view higher resolution poster here .

I had an interview for a film today, so we'll see how that goes..." You can read the whole interview here . You can watch two THE EYE trailers here and here.

14/12/07: Recent 2DVD edition of LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD released in R1 also features a 7minute-long documentary about the scores called Symphonic Book. Here is a brief selection of Marco Beltrami's comments available in the interview: “I think the biggest challenge for me in this project is the fact that it was the fourth in a [series], and that there was a musical identity associated with the past three scores. In terms of a motif for the John McClane character, that’s already been established from the previous movies and that’s something I used throughout the movie.“Michael Kamen scored the last three Die Hard movies and I was very conscious of that when we were doing this. This was definitely a Die Hard movie and … I thought there should be a connection between the first three and what I was doing, and yet also I have my own style. What we ended up doing was using some motives for the Bruce Willis character, McClane, and introducing that into the score as well as some stylistic things that were used in the first three. I’m always looking for ways to add something new and different to scores, so we had just a percussion session. I didn’t want to solely rely on synthetic electronic elements, but et I wanted to take acoustic sounds and manipulate them in an electronic way. We recorded the percussionists playing groove type stuff on all sorts of instruments from little small shakers to large metallic drums and all kinds of things. Then we took that and brought it back to my studio and cut it up and processed the stuff through the computer and created loops out of it that we used as a basis for some of the rhythmic elements in the score." Marco Beltrami was also nominated as Best Composer award of The Broadcast Film Critic Association for his 3:10 TO YUMA score.

BEST COMPOSER
Marco Beltrami - 3:10 to Yuma
Alexandre Desplat - Lust, Caution
Clint Eastwood - Grace Is Gone
Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood
Dario Marianelli - Atonement
Alan Menken - Enchanted

19/11/07: Following info appeared today on Mikael Carlsson's UpcomingFilmScores blog: "Marco Beltrami has been hired to compose the original score for THE EYE, replacing composer Angelo Badalamenti who was the first composer onboard (he left the project for personal reasons). Beltrami, who has an impressive horror filmography (the Scream trilogy, Resident Evil, Hellboy and many more), is working for the first time with French directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud, who impressed audiences with their genre film Them last year. The film is a remake of the award-winning 2002 Hong Kong film directed by the Pang Brothers., and tells the story about a woman who receives an eye transplant that allows her to see into the supernatural world. Jessica Alba stars in the new version, which is scheduled to premiere on February 1, 2008. Beltrami's involvement in The Eye has been confirmed to Upcoming Film Scores / Film Music Weekly by Capital Arts Entertainment." You can view the poster in higher resolution here . There is also a cover for upcoming 3:1O TO YUMA CD.

15/11/07: Long awaited CD release of 3:10 TO YUMA will finally see light of the day on December 18th. You can already pre-order the CD on Screen Archives. Marco Beltrami is still waiting for his copy of IN THE ELECTRIC MIST to start working on the film, his future approach to his score he described in an interview for Film score monthly online (issue 31): "It's much more of an art film. I don't know if you know the story but the murders are sort of the setting. It's more a character piece or study than a genre film. It's really quite good. I saw some of it two weeks ago and I'm really excited about it. The interesting thing is that it all takes place in rural Louisiana and it has heavy Cajun influence. I'm not gonna trying to write Cajun source music, but more take Cajun ideas and itegrate them in the score. It's gonna be a fun project and a good challenge." Release of the film was moved from originally expected early December to March 26, 2008.

07/10/07: Happy 39th birthday to Marco Beltrami!

15/09/07: Official website now offers the chance to listen to more 3:10 TO YUMA samples (Bible Study and previously unreleased cue Coach Crash) and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (Copter Chase, Out of Bullets, The F-15). 31/08/07According to the latest news, no CD for 3:10 TO YUMA is currently planned and its existence depends on success of the film in the theatres. On the film's official website you can listen to some tracks of the score or you can download it here in the following tracklist. In the meantime, Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders started working on their new project, thriller IN THE ELECTRIC MIST starring Tommy Lee Jones, this week. Also some of the first reviews of 3:10 TO YUMA are available with some comments on the score. Eg Ain't it cool review: "From the very first note played during the opening title of 3:10 TO YUMA you know you are in for an honest to god, real life western. No modern bells and whistles, no post-modern twist or catch, but a real western that is proud to be one and goes for it all the way. ...... No review of this film, no heaping of praise, is complete without mentioning Marco Beltrami’s score. I’ve honestly never really been a big fan of his music. I think my favorite scores he’s done were on SCREAM and HELLBOY, but most of the time I don’t really dig on his music, but damn. He knocked it out of the park here. It’s not comically western, but it’s so western through and through. It could be over the top if it wasn’t so damn good."

Official website of danish sci-fi VIKAREN (THE SUBSTITUTE), directed by Ole Bornedala, also offers a few clips from the score. When you click on "download" the music starts to play. The score for the film was composed by Marcus Trumpp, Dana Niu and Bill Boston with Marco Beltrami providing additional music, producing the score and conducting the orchestra during scoring sessions, which took place in Copenhagen in mid-July last year. There are no news regarding release of the score on CD. VIKAREN was released in Denmark on June 15th and there are no release dates set up for the rest of the world yet.

17/06/07: Unlike Michael Kamen who based his previous Die Hard scores on various classical pieces (Beethoven, Sibelius, Wagner), the only "classical piece" reffered to in LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD score is "America the Beautiful". For more details see following info from Buck Sanders who also revealed some details regarding 3:10 TO YUMA score: "America the Beautiful was recorded for a source cue. We weren't involved with that too much. It only appears once in the film. There are no classical piece references in the score. Unless you call Kamen's original score classical. There are a lot of references to that. The director wasn't interested in doing anything with classical pieces and was very keen on Marco trying to provide the feel of the original Die Hard movies. A tribute to the original film in a way. There is about an hour of music for Yuma. There is a lot of sound manipulations, guitars, a piano, a small string group and solo trumpet. We do not reference the 50's Yuma Dunning score at all. It is very much a different film. We never even spoke about the original film with the director. Treated it like it's own thing."

15/06/07: RED EYE and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD samples are now online.

IN THE ELECTRIC MIST following in Marco's scoring schedule is currently being shot in Louisiana with Tommy Lee Jones playing the lead character Dave Robicheaux. John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Sarsgaard and Ned Beatty co-star in the film which is directed by Bertrand Tavernier. Release date is set for December 10th, 2007.  Check again soon for RED EYE and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD samples.

13/06/07: Here is the first scoring session report by John Mansell who visited 3:10 TO YUMA sessions in London's Abbey Road Studios and also provided the photos. The text was originally included on FSM's discussion board: "Session that I went to was on monday 11th june at abbey road london. the orchestra was a small string ensemble, with trumpet and also guitar, but other music had been recorded in LA, the movie looks great full of action, and the score i personaly think is very good, I know a few people were curious about the approach that Mr Beltrami would take, i will try and describe it as best I can, in the first part of the session the cues were mainly down beat sort of suspence filled cues, but after the break it livened up a hell of a lot, one cue in particular stood out for me there is a stage coach robbery/attack sequence, the score is driving and savage sounding, a almost fuzzy sounding guitar stood out and also the use of a solo trumpet was very effective, there was also some amazing guitar player from the British soloist Mitch, this cue as many of the others had a sort of a hook to it, you know guys it is probably the track on the album that will be played the most, it builds and builds its just the best, dare I say it had a slight spaghetti western sound to it in places, but no overly Morricone, more of a sound that we associate with the genre as a whole, but the composer added more by the use of dramatic and driving strings, there are also so less robust/action cues and a particulary melodic and heart rending theme which plays over the death of one of the characters, I found this composition quite mesmerizing, let me say here and now, anyone who has ever said that Mr beltrami has never written a theme, well take another listen to his scores, Hellboy, the faculty, etc etc and oh yeah dont forget the SCREAM trilogy. because they contain some great material, and when you hear 3 10 to yuma you will be blown away, The composer and his team Buck and John were realy friendly and welcoming. and the musicians were excellent, I enjoyed the session and felt privelaged to attend."

09/06/07GDT is currently shooting HELLBOY: THE GOLDEN ARMY in Hungary and confirmed he is decided to work with Danny Elfman on the film: "Danny Elfman IS going to score HELLBOY II and I feel privileged. I have worked with Marco Beltrami many times and will work with him soon enough but I believe we will have a beautiful score with Elfman, whom I admire greatly (in fact the "Title sequence" music cue had the "Ta-de-dum-ta-de-dum" rythm by explicit request by me in an atempt to make it kind of Elfmanesque) and with whom I share a dark view of the world."
To have some good news as well, RED EYE score bootleg is now circulation in the world and includes 30 tracks with total time 71:59 (so far there are two more versions available - one including End Credits suite as the bonus cue, the second includes 4 more cues of additional music composed by Kevin Manthei). Tracklist of the first version was added to the discography. On Youtube you can now watch three scenes from Marco Beltrami's first score DEATH MATCH herehere and here. All clips include well hearable music which is, in fact, based entirelly on electronics (possibly due to budget restrictions). The score has never been available in any form.

30/05/07: The scoring sessions for the upcoming western 3:10 TO YUMA will start next week in London. You can check a brief clip from THE INVISIBLE score (ripped from the film in very poor quality and with all the dialogues and SFX - so spoiler allert) here. The clip consists from the opening cue (different version than is available through Marco's myspace page) and finale scene where the main theme is developed within 7 minutes and IMO is one of the most beautiful and touching cues Marco have written so far. More clips should be coming soon through the official website.

30/04/07: Varese Sarabande will release Marco Beltrami's original score CD for LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD on June 26th. Colosseum Records (European distributor of Varese) will release the CD one day earlier with catalogue number CVS 6824.2. Here is info from Varese's website: "Live Free or Die Hard is the ultimate summer action ride. In a season overflowing with CGI Fantasy, Live Free or Die Hard gets real — with real action, real humor and a relatable everyman hero: John McClane. On the July 4th holiday, an attack on the vulnerable United States computor infrastructure begins to shut down the entire nation. The mysterious figure behind the scheme has figured out every modern angle — but he never figured on an old-school “analog” fly in the “digital” ointment. Bruce Willis is John McClane. No mask. No cape. No problem. With three previous films, Die Hard is one of the most successful action franchises of all time. The great Michael Kamen scored each of the other Die Hard films though Kamen’s untimely passing in 2003 meant that a new composer would need to assume the podium for the latest score. Marco Beltrami has done an outstanding job of both scoring the new film as well as paying tribute to Kamen’s memory. Live Free or Die Hard is one of the major “event” films and scores of the summer. The 20th Century Fox film opens nationwide on June 27. Live Free or Die Hard is set to be the blockbuster film of the July 4th holiday weekend."

30/04/07: According to the news confirmed by two different sources very close to Marco Beltrami, he won't be scoring upcoming HELLBOY: THE GOLDEN ARMY. According to so far known news, Danny Elfman might be approached by Guillermo del Toro regarding this film. There was no deal signed yet and no composer announced by Universal who will release the film in August 2008.

25/04/07: Greenspan Artist Management has announced that Marco Beltrami has signed to score the remake of the 1957 western 3:10 TO YUMA, starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. The film is directed by James Mangold and will be released by Lions Gate later this year (October 7th). Marco is currently finishing on the music for the fourth Die Hard film staring Bruce Willis, LIFE FREE OR DIE HARD, scheduled to premiere on June 27. Paying tribute to the scores Michael Kamen wrote for the first three films, Beltrami uses Kamen's four-note signature suspense motif, but the score will also have electronic elements in addition to the orchestral music. - Source: Film Music Weekly.

11/04/07: Altough soundtrack album THE INVISIBLE was originally announced as a combination of songs and score, it features only songs of various artist without any piece of Marco's original score. So far there are no news if the score album will ever be released either as a CD or as download only. In the meantime Marco is finishing his score for DIE HARD 4.0 and you can download the latest trailer (fantastic one) here in resolution middle (18,6 MB) or high (30 MB).

01/03/07: According to Film Music Weekly issued on February 26, soundtrack from THE INVISIBLE will be released by Hollywood Records on April 10. 17/02/07Marco currently starts working on LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, Buck Sanders confirms today. Check Marco Beltrami's my space page with the first sample from upcoming THE INVISIBLE.

17/02/07: Guillermo Del Toro won BAFTA award in category Best foreign language film and Pan's Labyrinth is nominated for 6 Academy Awards for Best original screenplay, Foreign Language film, Best Cinematography and Best original score among others. Meanwhile, Del Toro is preparing for shooting of HELLBOY: THE GOLDEN ARMY that should start in sping in Hungary. You can check two short interviews with Del Toro with brief mentions of HB2 here and here. The next upcoming Del Toro's projects are AT THE MOUNTAIN OF MADNESS (you can read the first review of the script, co-written by Matthew Robbins, here) and TARZAN: "It’s a done deal that we’re developing the screenplay and I really want to work with John Collee, and I loved Master and Commander; I read them and I never felt they could be made into a 20-part BBC miniseries. I’m always obsessed by nurture verses nature – it’s how this guy learns to become an ape at first, and then how this ape learns to be a man in the second place, and then he becomes what he needs to become and that is Tarzan. I think that’s a process I’m interested in whether the character’s name is Hellboy or Tarzan - it’s how you learn who you are in the process of choosing." Regarding the actual Marco news, you can download international teaser trailer for LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD here in resolution small (2,86 MB) or large (18,5 MB).  THE INVISIBLE originally set for theater release on January 26th was re-schedulled for April 27th release. CAPTIVITY is set for a limited US release on May 18th. No word about a wider release yet. More news hopefully coming soon...
